Drs. Kathelijne van Nielen

Neurologist-Somnologist

I graduated in neurology at the University of Groningen in the year 2000. I’ve practiced within my profession with great enthusiasm ever since. Not only is it important to listen to the  patient, but asking the right questions, noticing the symptoms and deductive reasoning are equally important. Anatomical knowledge and knowledge of the functioning of the nervous system help me to determine the most probable cause of a complaint. Simple tools such as the reflex hammer and tuning fork are also of help. When the diagnosis is confirmed after a more thorough investigation, it feels as if a riddle/calculation has been solved. Every patient is different and needs tailored treatment or advice. Treatment options in neurology have expanded in the last decade. This way my job remains fascinating. I have a broad interest in neurology, but a special interest in some focus areas. Since 2016 I am a certified somnologist: expert in sleep medicine. I have worked in several hospitals, including university and top clinical hospitals. The Dutch branch of ACIBADEM, located in Amsterdam, is a relatively small centre: the more personal care that a small organization can provide greatly appeals to me. Besides, ACIBADEM is part of an international network.  I like the dynamic atmosphere that results from working in a rapidly developing organization . I can practise neurology in (almost) all its aspects, in a pleasant team of physicians and motivated staff.
