Frequently asked questions about a new hip

Or go directly to frequently asked questions about a new knee.

1. How long does a hip replacement last?

This depends on various factors. Important factors include your age and weight. Of course, the placement and the material of which the prosthesis is made, also has an influence.
The prosthesis that is used standard in our clinic has a particularly good track record and a special feature that it is fortified with vitamin E. The latter seems to benefit the lifetime of the prosthesis. Almost every person with this hip prosthesis functions well after 10 years and about 85% after 15 years.

2. Do I really need a hip replacement?

Our medical specialists are very experienced and judge every case exceptionally. If you meet certain criteria, it is decided to place a prosthesis in consultation with you. The severity of the wear of the hip, can be determined with an X-ray or, for example, an MRI scan.

3. How long will I be admitted by Acibadem IMC?

Usually you stay one night after the operation. This seems quick but you will notice that you can move safely with crutches relatively quickly. Our physiotherapists visit you on the day of the operation to practice this.

4. How does the recovery period go?

We prescribe you pain killers, so that you feel relief with little pain. Experience shows that the complaints are reduced every week and that after 6 weeks most complaints have disappeared. There are certain rules you must adhere to at the beginning. Certain movements can lead to the hip coming out of the bowl. Kneeling or squatting in the first three months after the operation should not be done. In our clinic three different methods are used to place your hip and a larger hip head is used as standard to reduce the chance. For further information, you can ask your orthopedic surgeon.

5. Can I practice all sports with the hip prosthesis?

You can exercise with a new hip. Contact sports are not recommended. Tennis, golf, skiing and cycling are example of sports that are possible with a new hip. In the beginning we advise to cycle, especially to reactivate the muscles. After a period of recovery, you can slowly build up the rest, possibly with a customized program by your physiotherapist.

Frequently asked questions about a new knee

1. How long does a knee prosthesis last?

This depends on various factors. Important factors include your age and weight. Of course, the placement and the material of which the prosthesis is made.
The prosthesis used standard in our clinic has a particularly good track record and has a special feature where the placement of the prosthesis takes place with an ingenious instrument that can produce natural flexion and stretching. In our clinic there is also a study in which 3-dimensional fits for the operation are made based on your X-rays.
Almost everyone with the knee prosthesis functions well after 10 years and about 85% still functions well after 15 years. We use prosthesis that lasts for more than 15 years with good use.

2. Do I really need a knee replacement?

Our medical specialists are very experienced and judge every case exceptionally. If you meet certain criteria, it is decided to place a prosthesis in consultation with you. The severity of the wear of the knee can be determined with an X-ray or, for example, an MRI scan. If the wear of the knee is not so severe, the pain can in many cases be treated with paracetamol or anti-inflammatory drugs. Sometimes a viewing operation or brace is sufficient. With moderate knee wear, an injection into the knee joint is an option.

3. How long will I be admitted by Acibadem IMC?

Usually you stay one night after the operation. During surgery, your doctor will anaesthetize the knee, allowing you to exercise quickly without pain. You can go home if your wound is dry and you have successfully completed the exercises with the physical therapist. As an indication we indicate that you can reasonably bend your knee so that you can step into the car.

4. How does the recovery period go?

The first four to six weeks you walk with two crutches and you can fully 'load' the leg. It is important that you practice with the physical therapist. For the first six months, the knee may feel stiff, thick and warm. In that period it can be nice to occasionally cool the knee. In general this goes to a year. If you do standing work, talk to your specialist or physiotherapist when you can fully resume.

5. Can I practice all sports with the knee prosthesis?

The load on the new knee prosthesis depends on what you do, how you do it, how heavy you are and how much you do. With more load, the risk of wear is greater. Which you also have to take into account
